Journaling Workshop-Lesson 3/3

Journaling is a mindful way to practice being present–to pay attention on purpose–for personal growth; to develop self-exploration, self-expression, compassion, gratitude, reflection, and to alleviate stress. In this three-part workshop participants will practice mindfulness through journaling to ground and guide their writing. Each 90-minute session will begin with a brief introduction to a mindfulness practice, the given topic, and suggested writing strategies. The introduction will be followed by a guided mindfulness practice, journaling from a selection of prompts, optional sharing of journal entries, and nonjudgmental reflection on the experience. The first session centers on using the breath for self-exploration, expression, or compassion; the second session focuses on the senses and the environment to develop gratitude, and the third session expands a theme or topic that emerged through journaling in past two sessions.
The workshop is led by Kate Remlinger, who taught writing for over 35 years to middle-schoolers and university students. For the past 10 years she has integrated mindfulness practices into her daily routine, university teaching, and participated in and facilitated mindfulness workshops at Grand Valley State University.
